Death of Kagiso Mampe

Paul Edwards writes:

It is with sadness that I must report the death of Kagiso Mampe. He died suddenly on Saturday 5th March 2005. To his girl friend, Lucy Mokwena and their 9 month old son Lesego, his sister Mpho, his brother Sipho, his mother and his grandmother we extend our deepest condolences.

Kagiso was introduced to Go in 1995 when he was 19 years old. He was a founder member of the Soweto Go Club, he taught Go in various Soweto schools and organised many exhibitions and tournaments, thereby playing a major role in the establishment and development of Go in Soweto.

Kagiso reached the rank of 2-kyu in 2003. In the same year he represented SAGA at a cultural exchange program for two weeks in Japan as a guest of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2003 he was elected to the Council of the South African Go Association in which position he still served at the time of his death. Kagiso was always willing to help in whatever capacity was required. He was always cheerfully optimistic and a pleasure to be around, his presence will be sorely missed.
