Challenger Takao Shinji takes the 60th Honinbo title after beating title holder Cho U. Takao Shinji won the first 3 games forcing Cho U in a kado-ban (one more loss will lose the match). Cho U then proceeded to win the 4th game by skillfully defending his weak groups on the board.
The 5th game provided for a very tense and interesting watch. The game ended in a win for Takao Shinji after a very close endgame.

Konrad wins 9×9 tourney

Last night Stellenbosch club hosted their 2005 9×9 Go tournament. A good time was held by all (or so it seemed). Congratulations to Konrad Scheffler, the winner and only undefeated player of the tournament. Many thanks to David Richfield, the tournament director. Full results can be seen on the tournament page.

Gauteng-Western Cape showdown

For those of you not in the mailing-list loop, it looks like an internet team match between Gauteng (i.e. Joburg, Soweto and Pretoria club) and the Western Cape (i.e. Cape Town and Stellenbosch club) is in the offing for late July or early August. The match is scheduled to take place on KGS on a Tuesday night from around 19h30, but which Tuesday is yet to be finalised. All games will be scratch. The original plan was to have 10 players for each team, but this number is subject to change if there’s enough interest.

Each player will be responsible for his own internet connection, but it seems the Joburg club players at least are looking at getting together at an Internet cafe before their regulare games at the Joburg go club.

The “team managers” at this stage seem to be Tristen for Gauteng and Konrad for the Western Cape. The tournament is open to everyone, so if you want to play, contact the relevant team manager (mail them by clicking on their names) before 1 July. Note that the final teams will be selected by the team managers, so you may not get to play if the one region shows more interest, or if the teams are unbalanced, but I’m sure an effort will be made to accomodate as many people as possible.

I guess the plan is to make this an annual event if it’s a success. Once details are more clear, I’ll add a page about the event.

Anyone with more info or corrections on this post, please comment below).

Well, it’s been on the calendar for a while now, but the details for the tournament are now available. In summary – a 3 round MacMahon tournament in Stellenbosch on 6 August – a qualifier for the 2006 SA Closed, hopefully.

Tuesday at the Cape Town club

Even without the customary visit by Rory, Jaco and Bernard of the Stellenbosch club to the Cape Town Club on Tuesday night, the arrival of 4 new players at the club meant there were 10 players at the club, so it was quite busy. We welcome Chris Brown, Chris Welsh, Timothy Spring and Quinton Hoole to the Cape Town club. They have been added to the rating system at 23 kyu. Chris Brown and Chris Welsh have both already been promoted to 22 kyu. Thanks to his two victories on Tuesday, James Gelant has also been promoted, to 13 kyu.
