New Chinese shodans and head coach

Today’s pro news comes from China. First off, the selection tournament for the new Chinese professionals has finished, and 20 players, 2 of them female, have been selected as new professional shodans. Apparently, the competition was fierce, with a number of top amateur favourites not managing to get entry into the professional arena.

Other news is that the Chinese national Go squad of nearly 40 top Chinese players has a new head coach, Ma Xiaochun, 9 dan. Ma is a former winner of the Tong Yang Securities Cup and Fujitsu Cup international titles, both in 1995, and was consequently considered the world number one at the time. He also won the World Amateur Go Championship in 1983 before turning pro, and authored the book The Thirty-six Stratagems Applied to Go.
