3-way tie in Stb 9×9 tournament

This year’s Stellenbosch 9×9 tournament had 12 participants, and used a 5-round Swiss format.

The tournament got off to an exciting start with the 2 top seeds, defending champion Konrad Scheffler and 1-kyu Andrew Davies, losing to Charl du Plessis and Hugo van der Merwe in the first round, leaving the tournament wide open. Jaco Swanepoel proceeded to be the only player to win his first 3 games, but in the fourth round he faltered, losing to Konrad Scheffler on time from a winning board position. This left 5 players with 3 wins after 4 rounds, and after the next round, 3 players remained on 4 wins out of 5 games. 2 players pulled out of the tournament in the last round, so it was decided not to use SOS or other tie-break mechanisms, but rather to leave the tied players as is.

As such, the tournament winners for 2006 were Konrad Scheffler, Jaco Swanepoel, and Steve Kroon.

More details, final positions and full results are available on the tournament’s page

Modesty prevents rank change announcement

It seems that Chris Welsh, who enters the Cape Town club games into the ranking system and announces resulting rank changes, is too modest to announce his own promotions. But some of us are tired of getting beaten up by him on an 8 stone handicap, so I’m afraid I have to insist on making his promotion to 7 kyu known to the world at large. Congrats!

breakfast vs thekro, commented by Konrad

I (thekro) played against Alexandr Dinerchtein (breakfast), a Russian 1-dan pro at the Hankuk Ki-won (Korean Go institute) a while back. It was a 7-stone handicap game, which he played simultaneous with a number of other games on KGS.

I somehow (don’t ask how) managed to forget that there was byo-yomi, resulting in me playing way too quickly and making some foolish mistakes, and I finally lost from what I think was a very good position for me.

In any case, Konrad Scheffler briefly commented the first part of the game, and I thought some people might be interested: Click here to check it out.

9×9 tournament next Thursday

Stellenbosch is hosting their annual 9×9 tournament at their club meeting next Thursday. If you have a 9×9 board, please bring it along. No need to register in advance, just be at the club by 19h00. From there, we’ll set up the draw and get going – first game should be underway by 19h15.

Last year’s defending champion is Konrad Scheffler. There is no entry fee, and the winner will only get fame and a certificate. The tournament format will be determined by the tournament director (that’s me) on an ad hoc basis, depending on the number of entrants.
