WC Closed moved

For those following the Western Cape Closed, please note that the tournament has been moved to WC Council->WC Closed on the menu system. This is due to a recent decision by the Stellenbosch and Cape Town clubs to transfer control of the tournament to the Western Cape Go council.

Last chance to buy a clock!!!

David Richfield is organizing a mass order of chess clocks for South African Go (and Chess, if chess players are interested). He has been collecting orders for a while now, and he is planning to make the final order this weekend.

Which means that if you still want one, you have to move fast. If you still want a clock, you must contact David Richfield to tell him that you want one, and arrange payment with him before the deadline for orders (Friday 14 July). For more information on the clocks, which are expected to cost R160 each, check out the clocks page on the SAGoClubs wiki.

SAGA council: call for nominations

Dear all,

I’d like to emphasise the following from David’s post:

“Nominations (made and seconded by SAGA members) must be sent to the
secretary.”

Nominations are invited for two positions on the SAGA council that will become
available in September. So far we only have one candidate, so please consider
volunteering – this is an opportunity to help develop go in South Africa!

What David forgot to mention is that the deadline for nominations (as
prescribed by the SAGA constitution) is 22 July. So get your nomination in
soon!

regards,
Konrad Scheffler

End of an era

Cho Nam-cheol, the founder of the Korean Baduk Association and the most dominent baduk player in Korea in the 1950′s and 1960′s, passed away just over a week ago. 83-year-old Cho died of old age at home on 2 July.

Cho was awarded the Eun-gwam Order of Culture Merit for his development of baduk in Korea in 1989, and on Tuesday, the Korean president, Roh Moo-hyun, posthumously awarded him the Geum-Gwan Order of Culture Merit as well. Cho was a student of Minoru Kitani in Japan from 1937-1944, before he returned to Korea intent on developing the game back home. It is largely due to his efforts that Korea features at all on the international pro scene, not to mention their many recent years of total domination in international tournaments.

More details can be found in this article in the Korea Times.

SAGA AGM announcement and agenda

The 2006 AGM has been scheduled to take place online in the South African Room of the Kiseido Go Server on 2 September, during the lunch hour of the 3rd quarter internet tournament.

Any new points for the agenda must be sent to the secretary well before the meeting.

Draft agenda:

  1. Adoption of the minutes of the previous AGM (held on 10 September 2005 at the Westdene Recreation Centre), including the new version of the constitution, with some typographical corrections.
  2. Receipt and consideration of Officers’ reports for the preceding year.
  3. Adoption of the annual financial statements.
  4. Election of Council Members:
    1. Reinhard Messerschmidt’s term of office as membership secretary will expire, and he is not available for re-election. Nominations (made and seconded by SAGA members) must be sent to the secretary.
    2. Andre Connell was co-opted to fill the position made vacant by Victor’s resignation. This position expires this year. Andre is available for election and has been nominated (nominated by Konrad Scheffler; seconded by Sakkie Buys).

SAGA council meeting

For those interested in the administrative side of things, here are the hot-off-the-press draft minutes of tonight’s SAGA council meeting (to be put up in all the right places in due time, but hopefully not by me). Please note point 6: we are looking for a volunteer to help formulate and implement a policy regarding rating certificates.

Draft minutes for SAGA council meeting held on Wednesday 5 July 2006:

Present: Konrad Scheffler, Sakkie Buys, Reinhardt Messerschmidt, Andre Connell
Apologies: David Richfield, Julius Paulu, Chris Welsh

1.Acceptance of previous minutes: the draft minutes of the previous council meeting were accepted.

2. AGM: The annual general meeting has been scheduled to take place online in the South African Room of the Kiseido Go Server on 2 September, to take place during the lunch hour of the 3rd quarter internet tournament. Reinhard Messerschmidt’s term of office will expire, as will Andre Connell’s co-opted membership. Andre is available for election and has been nominated (nominated by Konrad Scheffler; seconded by Sakkie Buys). Reinhardt is not available for re-election.

3. Pair Go: South Africa has formally been invited to participate in the World Pair Go Championships to be held in November. The representatives for 2006 are to be selected via the planned pair go tournament. Konrad will check with Victor Chow whether he is still organising it.

4. Qualification system for the SA Candidates: It is felt that the current qualification system is unfair, as qualifiers are effectively selected on rating only. Andre and Konrad will liase to come up with a proposal.

5. Internet games: It was decided that games played between South Africans over the internet (under the existing criteria for counting towards the rating system) should count the same weight as ordinary games for rating and participation point purposes.

6. Rating certificates: The project to award rating certificates to SAGA members is currently stalled, awaiting a volunteer to run it. Any SAGA member is encouraged to volunteer for this.

7. Signatory to the bank account: Andre Connell has been approved as second signatory to the bank account.

8. Next meeting: The next SAGA Council meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday 3 October at 19h30 on MSN.
