New Stellenbosch Go club committee

Yesterday night was the Stellenbosch club’s annual general meeting and prizegiving. Attendance was dismal, with only 5 people actually attending the meeting.

A change to the consitution was made unanimously, modifying the quorum for general meetings from 30% of the club membership to 5 people, so we just made quorum for the rest of the meeting.

The committee size was also reduced from 5 to 3. Steve Kroon, Florian Breuer and Andries Kruger stepped down from the committee, while Bernard Broens joined Jaco Swanepoel and Rory Beling to form the committee for 2006/2007.

Congratulations and good luck to the new committee for the coming year. For those wishing to liaise with the club, the new club president is Jaco Swanepoel.

Cheng Lai’s good performance in the SA Contenders’ has earned him a promotion to 3d, and about time, many will say. A hearty congratulations to him.

On the other hand, Paul Edwards suffered a poor result in the SA Contenders, and as a result has been demoted to 1 kyu.

KZN Tourney brings rating system to over 200 players

These 8 players took part in a mini-tournament held in the Westville Library over the long weekend. The tournament was arranged by Peter Charter, and seems to have been quite a success, with plans for followup tournaments and perhaps later a Kwazulu-Natal Open.

Francis Parker won the tournament with 3 wins, followed by Ethan, Paul and Peter on 2 wins. It was a kind of Swiss tournament: initial ranks were estimated, and then adjusted up and down a stone after each match, depending on the results.

The results were used to estimate ranks for the players on the national rating system, where they have now been added. This addition marks a milestone for the rating system, which now ranks over 200 players.

As a result, we welcome Francis (7k), Ethan (17k), Paul (15k), Julian (19k), Zane (18k), Kyle (20k), and Duncan (21k) to the national rating system, and congratulate Ethan and Kyle, who have also been promoted to 16k and 19k respectively.

Details should appear on a tournament page shortly.

Change on site

I’ve modified the main blog so only the first two articles show up completely on the main page. This is to address 2 issues. The first is that it will hopefully be less bewildering for new visitors, since the orientation post now stands out a little more, and secondly, it reduces unnecessary traffic, since posts are re-downloaded less often for regular visitors, and because of the post categorization, infrequent visitors can visit just the posts of interest to them.

Post authors: please note that categorization of your posts is now much more important than before.

Statistics Update

Anyone looking at the current statistics would not be surprised by Chris Visser’s recent promotion to 1 dan. Over the last year, Chris is the #2 player in terms of win/loss ratio, but more importantly, has combined it with great consistency playing as both black AND white – he is #3 on the list of best players as black (winning 70% of his games), and #4 on the list of best players as white (winning 80% of his games). For someone as highly ranked as Chris already is, this is an astounding run of form.

Shuitao heads for Seattle

Shuitao Fan writes:

Dear Go friends,

I am leaving South Africa and going to USA to work this Friday ( Cape Town -> Amsterdam -> Seattle ) , so I won’t be able to take part in the league anymore. Sorry I should have sent a message earlier but this has completely slipped my mind in the past few months.

Thank you for the great games, I really enjoy the time here. I can see you people are doing a great job to promote go and I give my best wishes to your efforts! I wish I would come back here some day and meet you at the go club.

Cheers,
Shuitao

Our best wishes go with you in this new chapter of your life, Shuitao.
