Impromptu short notice Stellenbosch go meeting tonight from 19h00

This week sees a conference held by the Maths department of
Stellenbosch University. 5 of the attendees are Japanese,
and they all are interested in playing Go, with at least one
of them being dan-level. Tonight is the only evening they
are available, so everyone who’s interested, please show up!

Hopefully we’ll be able to provide these visitors with a
good Go playing experience in South Africa, and perhaps get
a good game from them as well. To help accomodate this, the
idea is that the players from Cape Town who can, will come
through to Stellenbosch for their Tuesday night meeting.
This should swell the numbers a little, as well. Please
bring a Go set along if you have one. We will be meeting
from 19h00.

Adrian’s stepfather passes away

This Sunday, Adrian Thom’s stepfather, Bernard passed away at home. It is not confirmed, but it seems the cause of death may well have been a heart attack. Adrian is a regular and active member of the Stellenbosch club, and Bernard was well known to most members of the club, since he was employed at Jeff’s Place, right next to the club’s meeting place in the Neelsie.

Bernard’s loss leaves a huge void in the lives of Adrian and his mother Wynandia, as well as his other family members. Please carry them in your thoughts and prayers.

The funeral will take place in Stellenbosch on Saturday, 27 January. If you would like more information, please e-mail me.

A themed problem collection from GoGoD

The GoGoD team’s New In Go column recently released an interesting themed collection of problems. The solution to these full board problems, all from pro games, are all of the same nature. The challenge is to try find the common theme among the problems, and of course the individual solutions.

Jaco promoted

Jaco Swanepoel beat Rory last night at the Stellenbosch club, giving him a long-awaited and well-deserved promotion to 3 kyu. 4 kyu has been quite a barrier for Jaco, with the difficulty confounded by a number of games lost on time from a winning position.

Congratulations Jaco!

Go-test on

Alexander “Breakfast” Dinerchtein, the Russian who made it to 1-dan pro at the Korean Go institute, has been quite busy with popularising Go lately.

Besides the Goama newsletter, which he is editor of, featuring commented games, discussion of josekis and trick plays, interviews with pros, occasional quizzes, and more, Alex has recently made a webpage which allows one to get an idea of one’s strength.

Do the test here (take your time). The ranks given seem generally to be a bit inflated. See the bottom of the linked page on the results page to see how your results match up with European and American ranks.
