Another proposed ad-hoc rank change

Based on new input from Andrew Davies, Chris Welsh and Guillaume Binet, I intend to implement an ad hoc promotion of James Gelant to 7-kyu. Please let me know in the next two days if you wish to lodge an appeal.

Update: The rank change has been implemented. Congratulations, James.

Joburg Open

A very successful 2007 Johannesburg Open was held at the Westdene Recreational Centre yesterday. Due to the size and strength of the field (15 boards were used per round), 4 rounds were needed to establish a clear winner. Going into the final round, there were 2 undefeated players above the bar, with Victor Chow (7d SAGA) went on to win the tournament by beating Aki Zhou (5d SAGA) in the final round. Special mention also goes to Carle Joubert for winning all 4 her matches.

Proposed ad hoc rank changes

Two ad hoc rank changes now have enough support for approval. If you wish to appeal against these rank changes, please contact me by email (kroon@sun.ac.za), or leave a comment on this post.

The relevant players are:

Carle Joubert, with a suggested promotion to 6-kyu, based on feedback from Andre Connell, Tristen Taylor and Ben Gale; and

Riaan Swart, with a suggested promotion to 10-kyu, based on feedback from Florian Breuer, Andre Connell and John Leuner.

Update: The promotions have been implemented. Congratulations to both of you.

Tristen delivers the goods

Congratulations to Tristen Taylor. After a period of silence in the Go world as he wrestled with his thesis, he submitted it in February. Even his usually active blog went through a period of calm, but now, it seems, his activity levels are back up, and we look forward to his enthusiasm returning to the Gauteng Go scene.

Read his story about beating the submission deadline on his blog here.

Cape Town Open 2007

The tournament is scheduled for Saturday 19 May, and will be a 3 round MacMahon tournament, and takes up the morning and afternoon, the last round ending at about 17h45.

This tournament is hosted by the Cape Town Go club: the venue is A Touch of Madness restaurant in Nuttall Road, Observatory. We hope that players will support them by having lunch and/or refreshments there (The proprietors have stressed that they can also do breakfasts).

The Cape Town Open is open to all players of all strengths, and the entry fee is R10 for SAGA members, and R20 otherwise. You do not have to be a member of SAGA to play.

In particular, we encourage all members of the Stellenbosch club to enter, regardless of their strength.

If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Chris Welsh (quantumf AT schedule7.com) for more information, or send him your name, club (if you belong to one), and the grade you wish to enter the tournament at, to register.

This tournament is a qualifying tournament for the annual South African Closed.

More information about the tournament is available here

WC Closed 2007 – Volunteer Tournament Director Needed

This annual tournament has been run by Steve Kroon in recent years, but he is unable to perform that role this year. So we need a volunteer to run at least the preliminary stage of the tournament, which attempts to find two players from the western cape to enter the final stage of the tournament. This preliminary stage is typically spread over a long time (4-6 months), and typically involves games played at club nights. So the duties would be:

  • Determining a suitable format (in conjunction with Steve Kroon and WC Council)
  • Capturing the results via email and updating a web page with the results and fixtures
  • So it would thus require a very small amount of work but spread over a fairly long time.

Please contact myself or Steve Kroon if you’re willing to help out in this capacity.
