Andrew Davies joins the dans!

andrew_headshot.JPGYesterday at the Cape Town club, Andrew Davies became the first player ever to be promoted to 1-dan in the Western Cape. This followed a good performance in the 2nd Quarter internet tournament this weekend, where he defeated Konrad Scheffler, 1-dan, to put him in striking range of a promotion. Last night, he defeated Chris Welsh on 4 stones (who was also promoted this weekend) to claim the promotion.

Our hearty congratulations to you, Andrew. Andrew pointed out the other day that this is the first promotion he’s ever earned on the South African ranking system, having joined the system at 2-kyu, and receiving an ad-hoc promotion to 1-kyu. I guess if you had to choose one to earn, this would be it!

Congratulations also to Mike Cave, who was promoted to 22k after a victory against Trevor Hill last night.

SA Go facebook group

For those of you on facebook, this is to let you know there is now a group on facebook for South African Go.

Feedback on the group is encouraged. I’m not on facebook, so I’m interested in how people experience the group.

As I understand the contact person about the facebook group is Hugo van der Merwe.

Commented games from RoseDuke and breakfast

Today we have a bumper crop of comented games: Victor “Roseduke” Chow has kindly provided commented versions of 4 of his World Amateur Go championship games, all against top 10 finishers. Alex Dinerchtein, the Russian 1-dan professional with the Korean Go Institute has also commented one of those games, along with 2 of Victor’s earlier victories against Japanese pro’s in the 2005 IGS Rapid Championships.

Alex plays and offers lessons on KGS as “breakfast”. For more details, check out his pages on Also, if you aren’t subscribed to his free weekly newsletter, you’re missing out. More info is on, including a subscribe link on the sidebar.

Well, here are the games:

Talking to Solaris

Cristian Pop, the former ex-insei who learnt go along with fellow Romanian, pro Catalin Taranu (5p), did really well at the WAGC this year, placing fourth. Another Romanian ex-insei, Sorin Gherman, caught up with Solaris, as Cristian is known on Go servers, to discuss his performance and development as a player after the tournament.

Check out the interview on 361 points.

Something to look forward to: I’ve got 3 of Victor’s games, commented by a pro: his game against Cristian in the WAGC, as well as his two pro victories in the IGS Rapid Champs. Hopefully I’ll be able to post them on Monday.

Sydney Go Journal available from 361 points

Chris Welsh agrees with me that 361 Points, Sorin Gherman’s Go dedicated website, is a great Go resource. I mentioned it in my last piece on the WAGC roundup, but today I’m highlighting something else on the site: a free Go magazine.

It turns out that there is some agreement between 361 Points and the Sydney Go Journal, so the website hosts copies of the journal. There are 12 issues so far, featuring instructive articles, some pro games, game discussion, and tournament reports. It’s a nice mix for people who enjoy reading articles for a change, instead of simply solving problems or studying variations.

I’ve added 361 points to the link collection on our site under Resources: General. The Sydney Go Journal’s are available at Enjoy!
