New Members and Promotions at the Cape Town Go Club

The Cape Town club welcomes two new members. First, Manfred Kimmel, a 5k player from Germany, who is visiting Cape Town for an extended period, and secondly, Giuseppe Murray, a new player who has been entered at 30k. In addition, we are also pleased to welcome Gareth Priede, a former Joburg club member.

Congratulations to Trevor Hill, who has been promoted to 15k after last night’s games. Clearly the recent adhoc promotion for Trevor was far too conservative.

In memoriam: Matthew Stallebrass

Go players who attended the Stellenbosch club in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s will remember Matthew Stallebrass as a club member. Matthew studied at Stellenbosch University before going to UWC to study his Masters in Computer Science. However, a blood condition led to him having a number of strokes in his early 20’s.

Matt, who lived in Somerset West, was a determined young man, who was intent on recovering fully from these setbacks and resuming his studies at UWC. Along the way, he bravely returned to the Stellenbosch club to try and pick up his Go playing again.

Matthew passed away earlier this month, on 15 August, ironically the same day that Bernard Broens passed away. I will always remember Matt as a dedicated man, who showed the most amazing spirit and optimism in the face of terribly difficult conditions.

I request that your thoughts and prayers go with the Stallebrass family.

Andrew wins 2nd Stellenbosch open

Congratulations to Andrew Davies, who successfully and emphatically defended his title this past weekend. He was the only player with a full score for the day. Reinhardt was unfortunate to meet him in the first round, leading to some unfortune pairing for him. He beat both players below the bar, but his SOS was too low for second place, which was shared by Jaco and Rory. Rory’s second place was thanks to an upset victory over Lloyd, which earned Rory a promotion to 3 kyu.

The only other upset of the tournament was Christina’s victory over Jonathan.

Bernard Broens dies on 24th birthday

It is with great sadness that we take leave of Bernard Broens. Bernard, one of the Stellenbosch club’s best players, and a member of the club committee in the past year, committed suicide on his birthday on Wednesday, by jumping off the Gourits river bridge. At this stage, I have no information on what prompted his action.

I believe I speak for all the club regulars when I say he was a popular and valued player at the club, and that this event causes a great sadness among us. Our deepest condolences also go out to Bernard’s family.

A full article with more details from Die Burger is on 24.com

Details on the memorial service are in this post.
