Baduk players in SA!

I have long wondered whether we have a Baduk playing community in South Africa, and last night this was confirmed! At the Pretoria go club, there were three Baduk players of various strengths from the Korean community. The strongest was Mr. Hoon Shim, rated at around 2 gup (probably 4 or 5dan in SAGA rating) and there were also two players of single digit kyu strength, Hany and Grace Lee. SAGA has had a long relationship with Japanese and Chinese go players (e.g. our two strongest players who learnt their go in China) and we’re very happy to welcome the Korean go players into our community too!

Proposed Ad-Hoc promotion

After games and consultations yesterday at the Pretoria Go club, I’m proposing that Anton van Niekerk be ad-hoc promoted to 8kyu. Anton was entered onto the ranking system at 15kyu in 2007, but since then has improved a lot and has had very few of his games entered onto the system. Supporting this promotion is John Leuner. If there are any comments or queries about the promotion, please let me know soon by either replying to this post, or contacting me directly.

Thanks,
Andre

Wiki logins fixed

It seems logging in to and creating accounts for the SAGoClubs wiki has been broken since the server move. I spent some time tracking down the problem today, and the problems should now be fixed. Please let me know if you have any trouble logging in to the wiki.

New SAGA Council

The deadline for nomination of SAGA council members has passed, and three
nominations have been received. Since this is the same as the number of
vacancies, this concludes the election procedure. I’d like to welcome the
following new council members, whose terms will start as of the AGM on 6
September:

Andrew Davies (nominated by Konrad Scheffler; seconded by Chris Welsh)
Steve Kroon (nominated by Konrad Scheffler; seconded by Ben Gale)
Chris Welsh (nominated by Konrad Scheffler; seconded by Andrew Davies)

They will join current council members Ben Gale, Andre Connell and Andries
Kruger, with Sakkie buys and Konrad Scheffler stepping down after having
completed their terms.

Record sheets available again

Since the website hack, player’s record sheets for the rating system have not been accessible from the player ratings page. I believe I have fixed the problem now, so you should be able to view any players record sheet by clicking on the small yellow folder icon next to their name.

Player graphs are not yet working.

Leela

From Leela’s website:

Leela is a new, strong Go playing program combining recent advances in Go programming and further original research into a small, easy to use graphical interface.

Leela lite is a slimmed down version of Leela which omits the 19 x 19 board, the highest playing levels and the analysis mode. This makes it an ideal introduction to the game. It is freely available.

According to Chris Welsh, the free Leela lite version is much stronger than programs like Many Faces of Go and Igowin, and has a far nicer interface. So this may actually be a better program to send beginners to. I know Konrad has given it a try.

So, give it a try, and leave your impressions in a comment…
