SA Closed Finals – the Contenders 2008

Hi all,

The SA Closed championships concluded this past weekend with the 2008 Contenders – the 8 strongest qualifiers participating in a gruelling 3 day round-robin competition to determine the SA Champion. The spoils went to the victor, in this case Victor Chow who was the only unbeaten player at the event. Full results are as follows:

1 – Victor Chow
2 – Konrad Scheffler
3 – Ben Gale
4 – Andrew Davies
5 – John Leuner
6 – Welile Gogotshe
7 – Andre Connell
8 – Sipho Mampe

The top 4 placings automatically qualify for the Contenders 2009, and positions 5-8 automatically qualify for the final day of the Candidates 2009.

See everyone again next year!

A note of clarification: With Julius’ death, a spot in the Contender’s became open. Welile received the spot as one of the players next in line, with the tie broken by SAGA rank.

  2. Andre says:

The three players who were considered for filling the final spot in the Contenders were Welile, Paul Edwards, and Chris Welsh. All 3 players ended day 2 of the Candidates on 1/3 wins. Welile was chosen because he was rated at 1d on the SAGA rating system, compared to 1k for Paul and 2k for Chris.
