WAGC news

Andrew Davies is currently representing South Africa at the World Amateur Go Championships. SAGoClubs wishes him the best of luck.

In the first round, Andrew met up with China’s 8-dan Hu Yuqing, losing in what was presumably a one-sided affair. Andrew’s next opponent is the 61-year old Guatemalan doctor, 7-kyu Edgardo Caceres Estrada, who is playing in his third WAGC.

For more information on the WAGC, visit the tournament page. We will continue to post periodic updates on SAGoClubs.

Edit: Andrew won his round 2 game. His next oppponent is one of the favourites, at least from a European point of view, namely the Finland representative Antti Tormanen 5d

Retroactive SAGA membership for 2008

Due to some administrative oversights last year, the SAGA council has decided to allow certain players to pay their SAGA memberships retroactively for 2008, allowing them to be allocated credit points for 2008. (Credit points are the points used for deciding which players represent South Africa at certain international events).

In order to avoid giving some players an unfair opportunity, this opportunity is available to all players who wished to join SAGA for 2008, and for some reason did not pay their membership fees. Membership means that you will accumulate credit points for your games in 2008 – otherwise you will simply have your total from 2007 (if applicable) depreciated. The membership list for 2008 is available at SAGA->Membership list on the menu.

If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, you must email Steve Kroon by 7 June (payment can be made in the usual fashion, and 2008 rates will apply).

Andrew Davies wins Cape Town Open

In what might be regarded as his warm-up event before jetting off to represent South Africa in the World Amateur Go Championship, Andrew Davies 2d
beat all comers to win the 2009 Cape Town open – congratulations, and may the good form last! Second place went to Konrad Scheffler, with Steve Kroon taking 3rd place ahead of Chris Welsh on tiebreak. We would particularly like to thank our hosts, “A Touch of Madness”, who not only provided a free venue but tossed free coffee and biscuits into the deal. Full results are available here and the gotha file is available here.

Edit: Congratulations to Rory Shea, promoted to 18k, and Paul Steyn, promoted to 10k, during the tournament.
