Another ad hoc promotion

Based on feedback from Andrew Davies, Chris Welsh, and Paul Steyn, as well as a KGS rank of 7k, I intend to ad hoc promote Trevor Hill to 9k, if no objections are made before Wednesday, 2 September.

Proposed ad hoc promotion

Chris Welsh and Andrew Davies propose promoting Alexander du Plessis to 5k. To support this, Andrew wrote (12 August):

He is 8k on our system, but last played here 15 months ago. He has been overseas (Japan I think) and has improved to 5k on KGS. Last night, taking B, he won 2
games:

  • Lloyd 1k, 5H; and
  • Jochiem Bethke 5k, 6.5 komi

I intend to implement this change if no objections are raised by Sunday, 30 August.

End Game Advice

One of the more unintuitive principles in endgame play is that you usually play gote moves before reverse sente moves (of the same value). This principle is illustrated quite nicely with this diagram:

In this position, black to move, a play on the first line (reverse sente) gains one point, and a play on the third line (gote) also gains one point (note: using miai counting). Which way should black play (assuming these are the last moves before dame)?

If black plays gote:

for a gain of +6 points.

If black plays reverse sente:

for a gain of +5 points!

KBC International Youth Baduk Camp

This is probably too short notice for most people, but King’s Baduk Education Centre is holding an International Youth Baduk Camp from 14-17 August. SAGA recently received information of this event, which will be held in Korea, and has space for 40 international participants. Anyone interested in taking part can contact the SAGA secretary at secretary@saga.sagoclubs.co.za for more information and an application form.
