Preliminary credit points for 2009

A preliminary credit point list for 2009 is available here. Please take a look at your record sheet, and let me know if there are any issues with the calculations.

With the current situation, which should not be affected substantially, international tournaments should be offered in turn to Ben Gale, Welile Gogotshe, Konrad Scheffler, and then Andrew Davies. These preliminary points include all the tournament placings for 2009, but may be missing some game results not yet entered on the rating system.

In addition, if your 2009 SAGA membership does not reflect on the membership list, you will not have received points for 2009 – please ensure your name is added to the list by contacting the membership secretary.

A final list of points should be posted in January 2010.

Bursaries for Computer Go at Stellenbosch University

Bursary funding is available for a computer Go project at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, at both masters and doctoral level.

Although they would be useful, knowledge of machine learning/artificial intelligence techniques and skill in the game of Go are not necessary. However, applicants should be good programmers, and preferably have some background in mathematics and statistics. Applicants require an Honours or 4-year degree in a suitable field (e.g. Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Maths, Electrical Engineering).

Bursary amounts (fulltime per year): Doctoral: R45000; Masters: R30000. (Chances are you’ll need an additional bursary/source of funding).

If you might be interested, please contact Steve Kroon. If you know of other people who might be interested, please forward this information to them.

[There is also some funding for robotic soccer strategy – see this page for more info.]
