Credit points deduction for international representation changed

In this post, SAGA members were given the opportunity to contribute to a discussion on changing the deduction formula applied to the credit points of international representatives. At the SAGA council meeting held on 13 January, a modified formula was passed. In principle, the same changes proposed in the original post were passed. However, the formulas presented in the original post.

For clarity, the original deduction was:
1000 [n+2-(T-P)/(T-1)].

This deduction formula has been altered, as of 2010, to:
1000 [n+(2p/100)-(T -P)/(T-1)],
where the new variable p is a factor representing the portion of the total cost being covered by sponsors (p=100 representing all costs covered, and p=0 representing no costs covered).

The value of p is, of course, subjective, and is to be set by the council – this task will usually be handled by the member with the tournament portfolio. When players are contacted about possible participation, the council will endeavour to provide as much information as they reasonably can on the value of p.

Credit points at end of 2009

The tentative final credit point list for 2009 is now available here. Please take a look at your record sheet, and let me know if there are any issues with the calculations. [If this is your first time: download the zip file, and unzip it. The text file contains a list of people and their balances – the recordsheets folder contains one file for each person with details of their calculation].

There was a mistake with the previous preliminary list issued in mid-December, where too many points for internet tournaments were awarded. This has been corrected.

Players have until 27 January (i.e. 2 weeks from today) to report errors, otherwise this list will be treated as final.

With the current situation, which should not be affected substantially, international tournaments should be offered in turn to Ben Gale, Welile Gogotshe (*), Konrad Scheffler, and then Steve Kroon.

*: Welile Gogotshe will be treated as if he is second on the list, regardless of his actual position, based on an earlier council decision to compensate for errors in previous years’ credit points calculations.

28 January 2010 Update: No objections to this list were received, so this list will be treated as final.

African Pair Go Championship 2010. Call for entries.

The Go associations of Africa urgently need to select a pair Go team to represent Africa at the WPGA Pair Go World Cup 2010 to be held in Hangzhou, China from March 20 to March 23. There will be 16 teams entered in the 4- round knock-out competition, and there is prize money for all teams (about R10 000 if eliminated in round 1).

An invitation has been given to South Africa, Morocco and Madagascar to select 1 team between them. The full costs, including flights will be covered.
The team requires 1 male and 1 female, with both players having the same nationality (naturally, 1 of the 3 countries listed above).

To make this selection, we will hold the African Pair Go Championship. Anyone interested in competing is welcome to enter (assuming they have suitable citizenship). It is preferable to form teams before entering; however, if you would like to play but cannot form a team, Andrew Davies will co-ordinate teams for South African players as far as possible.

Play will be over the internet, and will most likely require the use of the PANDA EGG client on IGS, since the tournament is sponsored by IGS Pandanet.

The tournament will be held on 23 January, with a backup date for 30 January. The format is to be decided, but will depend on the number of teams competing.

Please let Andrew Davies know if you would like to participate. Contact details:andrew.davies@cobham.com (w); 021 712 3204 (h).
