African representatives for WPGA Pair Go World Cup 2010

Congratulations to Victor and Carle who will represent Africa at the world cup to be held in Hangzhou, China from March 20 to March 23. They were the winners of the selection tournament held on 31 Jan.

Pair-Go, requiring a team of 1 male and 1 female is not big in Africa, and eventually only 3 teams were able to compete in the final. Of the IGF member nations, Madagascar and Morocco were unable to field any teams, and South Africa only managed 4, whcih was reduced to 3 on the day because of client/PC interface problems. The teams were:
Team1:
Victor Guang Chow, 7d
Carle Joubert, 4k
Team2:
Lloyd Rubidge, 1k
Cornelia vd Walt, 20k
Team3:
Rory Shea, 16k
Candice Barker, 27k

Round 1 was played between teams 2 and 3, and was won by Lloyd and Cornelia. They then faced team 1 in the final and were beaten by Victor and Carle. In both games it was interesting to observe the problems that arise when the partners follow different plans. It looked like upset results were quite possible.

Talk is underway to introduce a pair Go tournament to the SAGA calendar. Most likely it will be RenGo, where the gender of the teams is not specified.
