World Youth Baduk Festival

SAGA has received word from the Korean amateur baduk association (KABA), that this year’s World Youth Baduk Festival is scheduled for 6-11 August. Participants are responsible for the cost of reaching Korea, but it seems accommodation and transport in Korea during the festival are covered by KABA. If anyone is interested in taking part in this event, please let me know, and we will follow up to find out more about eligibility for the event.

Victor and Carle knocked out of Pair Go Champs in Round 1

Not exactly surprising, as they met the pair from China. Victor presumably persuaded Carle to have a go at his 5-5, 6-4 opening, but the Chinese pair had no difficulty in coping with this unusual opening, and despite black creating some enormous moyo’s, easily won the game, forcing a resign after 118 moves.

The game record can be viewed here: http://www.pairgo.or.jp/pgwc/2010/games_e.htm

Note, however, that it is in ugi format, which basically means you need the panda egg client installed on your PC. I can see no way to convert this to sgf format.

Lloyd Rubidge to represent South Africa at WAGC

Congratulations to Lloyd Rubidge, who has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Amateur Go Championships in May this year. This year, the tournament will be held in China, unlike previous years where it has traditionally been held in Japan. We wish Lloyd all the best!

SA Open 2010 report

The SA Open was held in Pretoria for the first time. It is great to see Go activity increasing here, and thanks to all in the club who helped with the event. The SA Open was a 6 round McMahon tournament played over Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February.

This year was anticipated to be an Oza event, but unfortunately with the withdrawal of the sponsorship, attendance at the event dropped. Also, the Dobsonville players only manged to attend on Sunday.

Congratulations to the following prize winners:
1st: Andre Connell
2nd: John Leuner
3rd: David Richfield
Best 11-7kyu: Gerrit Kapp
