The SA Candidates tournament was held on the 5th and 6th of June. It produced some very interesting games plus a number of upsets. These contributed to two promotions:
Sam Scott promoted to 1d
David Richfield promoted to 3k
The first day saw 4 people finish with 2/3, as the game between Sam and David did not take place. The top 4 qualified for day 2 of the Candidates. The final pacings for day 1 were:
David Richfield
Sam Scott
Welile Gogotshe
Sipho Mampe
Alexander du Plessis
James Nicolson
Paul Steyn
Francois van Niekerk
David, Sam, Welile and Sipho were joined by Lloyd, Chris, Steve and John who had pre-qualified based on last years results. In a closely matched group, Sam (1k) beat two 1d players on his way to 3/3 to win the tournament. Sipho unfortunately had network problems and disappeared soon after starting his first game. The final placings for day 2 were:
Sam Scott
Welile Gogotshe
John Leuner
Chris Welsh
Steve Kroon
Lloyd Rubidge
David Richfield
Sipho Mampe
Sam, Welile, John and Chris will now procede to the SA Closed in September, where they will be joined by Victor, Konrad, Andrew and Andre.
