John Leuner wins 2013 4th Quarter Internet Tournament

Congratulations to John for winning the 4th quarter Internet tournament for 2013. The field was disappointingly small, with only four entries – John Leuner 3d, Andrew Davies 3d, Chris Welsh 1d and Chris Visser 1d. The event was reduced to two rounds, with John and Andrew beating Chris Welsh and Chris Visser respectively. In the 2nd round John beat Andrew, and Chris W prevailed over Chris V (by half a point!)

The four games are below:

Round One:

John Leuner vs. Chris Welsh
Andrew Davies vs. Chris Visser

Round Two:

John Leuner vs. Andrew Davies
Chris Visser vs. Chris Welsh

Victor Chow wins Pandanet Cup Internet World Amateur Go Tournament

A hearty congratulations to Victor “RoseDuke” Chow, who won the 18th Pandanet Cup Internet World Amateur Go Tournament (also the 2013 SportAccord-Pandanet Cup Online Go Tournament) earlier this month! This victory also means he gets an expenses-paid opportunity to observe the World Mind Sports Games in Beijing in December.

In the final, he beat “Cornel” (presumably Cornel Burzo) of Romania. View the tournament table and (a UGI file of) the final game.

Edit: The original post erroneously indicated the prize was an opportunity to participate in, not observe, the WMSG.

SAGA: Proposed constitution changes

The SAGA council is considering changes to the SAGA constitution. These changes are in the discussion phase – if you would like to be a part of the discussion, or just be an observer, please let me know, and I will add you to our discussion mailing list.

These changes are primarily to allow SAGA to register as a public benefit organization, but other changes to streamline SAGA’s processes and reduce administrative overhead are also being discussed. In any case, the proposed changes will be communicated for you to vote on before being accepted.

Kind Regards

Paul Steyn

SAGA on Facebook

SAGA now has an official Facebook page.

While this blog site remains the primary platform for sharing news and events, we feel having a Facebook page might help spread knowledge and awareness of Go in South Africa in general and SAGA in particular. In addition, Facebook offers some excellent tools for connecting people.

We’ve started copying the galleries from the SAGO blogs site. Please contribute by liking the page itself and if you can, please caption the photo’s and tag people you know in the pictures. If you’ve got photo’s or video’s you’d like to share, please let anyone on the council know so that we can add you to the contributor list.

KPMC 2013 Update – Day Two

After five rounds Steve is 2/5

In round 4 he defeated Zhe Fan Mah 2d of Brunei. As the game was drawing to a close, he was 10-15 points behind, but found an excellent sequence of moves to exploit some corner aji and forced his opponent to resign. The game is attached below.

In round 5 he lost to Erik Ouchterlony 4d of Sweden. South African players with a keen memory may recall that Victor Chow lost to Erik, then a 3d, a few years ago at the WAGC.

More information from the KPMC, including some pictures, is available at the Official SAGA Facebook page

2013 KPMC Update

Steve Kroon, the South African representative at the 2013 KPMC, writes:

First round pairing is out, tomorrow morning I play Celeste Abat (5k) of the Philippines (she’s secretary-general of their go association, and one of the two – I think – female participants).
