South Africa beats Bulgaria 4-0

In what was certainly our best result of the Pandanet tournament so far, our players pulled off a 4-0 win. This meant we switched places with Bulgaria and are now in 2nd place. If we manage to win our remaining two matches, we will be in the promotion playoffs.

Not only did we have to battle our strong opponents, we had to deal with stage 3 load shedding, so some of our players couldn’t make it on the night. Fortunately, we had strong reserves in place. Congratulations to the players:

Victor Chow
Ben Gale
Andrew Davies
Andre Connell

Big prizes at European Go tournament

In what I believe was the largest ever purse at a European go event, this last weekend saw the holding of the first European Grandslam event. This event was open to the four professional EGF players, and the top eight amateurs by EGF rating. Ilya Shikshin 1p won the event and with it 10,000 Euros. There were also significant prizes for the lower places.

The picture shows Ilya receiving his 10,000 Euro cheque.

SAGA Credit Points for 2014

The SAGA credit point standings at the end of 2014 are now available for download. Also available is a zip file showing the calculations for each entry in the list.

Any errors or omissions must be reported to the Membership Secretary (Paul Steyn) by the 15th of April (one week from tomorrow). If errors are not reported, the current lists will be considered final, barring situations which the SAGA council deems exceptional.

    Notes on calculations:

  • All games for 2014 should have been entered on the ranking system by now
  • The sponsorship level for the WAGC is taken as 50%
  • The sponsorship level for the KPMC is taken as 75%

Update: No objections received by the deadline; the credit points are now considered final.
