Pandanet 13×13 Amateur World Go Championship registration open

Pandanet (IGS) is hosting their second 13×13 Amateur World Go Championship. Registration is open until June 19, see http://www.pandanet.co.jp/event/13ro_tournament/2nd/index_e.htm for official details. The only requirement to play is having a Pandanet ID, with confirmed rank if you want to enter one of the two classes that use handicap. Entry to the main class does not require a confirmed rank.

I entered the tournament last year and enjoyed it. The format is very relaxed, at least for the preliminary rounds. Players have approximately two weeks to complete at least six 13×13 games in their class room. The games can be played at any convenient time and against anyone available in the room, so the time commitment to complete the required games is very low. Players aiming to make the final rounds should be warned that they may find the time commitment much higher. The preliminary results from last year show that a number of competitors played over 40 games, and one player had 68 wins to just 3 losses. Points are computed by “wins / played + wins * 0.02” so while the ratio of wins to losses has the most significant impact on results, there is a benefit to players who have completed more games.

Overall, I enjoyed the flexible preliminary round structure, the opportunity to enter an international tournament, and the chance to apply my understanding of Go to a smaller board.

World Wide Iwamoto Awards 2015

We received the following announcement from Harry van der Krogt of the European Go Center

Announcement of the World Wide Iwamoto Awards 2015

The European Go Centre is happy to announce the World Wide Iwamoto Awards. In succession to the European editions in 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2012, the Iwamoto Awards now go global. Thanks to internet and social media, the world has become smaller, so we think it is time to invite people on a global scale to submit Go promotion projects.
These projects are collected in our public database. With this information everybody who is involved in the promotion of Go can find new ideas and inspiration for their own projects. You can have a look at our website at http://go-centre.nl/wp/home/iwamoto-awards/iwamoto-award-entries to see the submissions of previous editions of the European Iwamoto Awards.
The European Iwamoto Awards were much appreciated by the contributors of the projects, the EGF and the Nihon Ki-in. Therefore we want to extend the project and improve some features.

An international jury, with representatives from all continents will judge the entries. The best project will be awarded € 1.000 , two runners-up will both receive € 500.

You can find all details and the criteria for submitting projects on our website at: http://go-centre.nl/wp/26457/

African candidates are encouraged to submit proposals.

Players in the Western Cape are hereby notified that we will be holding our annual blitz tournament on Tuesday the 26th of November 2013, at our usual venue of the Touch of Madness. Please make sure you get there before 8pm if you wish to play. There are no entry fees, and the only requirement to play is that you have a stable rank on the SAGA system.

Detailed rules are available, but the basic idea is that the games use absolute time of 12 minutes per side. The games will be played with full handicap, including 10 points of komi per handicap stones if the rank difference exceeds 9 stones.

Can participants please bring sets and, more importantly, clocks!

Recent winners include Andrew Davies (2009 and 2010), Chris Welsh (2011) and Sam Scott (2012). We have to go back to 2008 to find a non-dan winner, that was Ashley Ross, 15k at the time.
