The 1999 South African Open was originally scheduled for 7-9 August, but was held on 6-7 November at Marks Park, Johannesburg. 2 professionals, Mr. Haruyama (9p) (co-author of “Basic Techniques of Go”) and Mr. Kirimoto (3p) visited the tournament as observers, and prizes were awarded by Mr. K. Niizuma of the Japanese embassy, as follows:

SA Open Champion: 1. Victor Chow (6d), 2. Clive Hunt (1d), 3. Michael Yang (4d)
SA Open Youth Champion: Michael Yang (4d)
SA Open Veteran Champion: Charles Levitt (7k)
SA Open African Players Champion: 1. Chris Visser (1k), 2. Julius Paulu (3k), 3. David Lubinsky (2k)*
