Report:
(by Paul Edwards)

The 2nd Soweto Open was held on Sunday 25 March. Although there were only 20 participants it was nevertheless an interesting if somewhat noisy tournament. During the course of the day church groups in neighbouring rooms belted out their hymns with ceaseless gusto. Perhaps next year the tournament should be held on a Saturday.

After 3 rounds the tournament ended with the players ranked from 1st to 20th in order of their ratings with only one player, Mpho Mampe, winning all three games. As this was an unbarred MacMahon tournament with handicaps these results indicate that the players ratings were fairly accurate and that the SAGA rating system is working well.

After 2 rounds Chris Visser(1d), Ben Gale(1d), Paul Edwards(1d) and Julius Paulu(1k) had each won a game and had played only amongst themselves. Because there was an initial two stone gap between these four players and the next strongest player it was inevitable that the draw for the final round would complete the round robin between these players, so Chris was drawn to play Julius and Ben to play Paul.

As it happened these were the last two games of round three to finish. Of these two games the Paul – Ben game finished first, with Paul winning, so all attention was focussed on the death throes of the final game. If Julius beat Chris then Paul would win the tournament outright and there would be an unbreakable three way tie for 2nd place. If Chris won then, although he and Paul would be tied on MacMahon, SOS and SOSOS points, he would win the tournament because he had beaten Paul in their in 1st round game. Paul would come second, Ben third and Julius fourth.

Chris was under severe pressure not only because everyone present was clearly rooting for Julius but also because he was in byo yomi and had not had time to count. He knew neither whether he was ahead or behind nor by how much. Under these circumstances it is not unusual to make a major blunder, but Chris kept a cool head won the game and the tournament to become the 2nd Soweto Open Champion.

Congratulations Chris.

Dear Go players,

The 2nd Soweto Open will be held this Sunday 25 March at Forte High School, Jonas Moabi Drive, Dobsonville.
This will be one of the two qualifying tournaments that will be held this year for the Candidates.

Hopefully a strong field will turn up to challenge the current title holder Eric Wang(3d).

I have attached the advert with all the details but if perhaps you cannot open it and would like more details please contact me.

Regards

Paul Edwards.

Note by Steve: according to records on this site, Welile Gogotshe was the title holder from 1999. If Eric Wang won in 2000, then this is not the 2nd tournament, or the 1999 tournament had another name.
