This Week's News
- 4/3/2005 - Vit Brunner a Czech amateur 4 dan, and professional
go tutor, has kindly allowed us to supply a collection of famous historical go games, which you can get
from the download section. The collection includes the game which gave rise to the belief that triple-ko is
unlucky, the first official international match, the blood-vomiting game, the ear-reddening game,
Shindou (actually Sai) and Touya's first match (originally Shuwa vs. Shusaku), Go Seigen playing mirror go
for 64 moves, the "16 soldiers" game, the atom bomb game, and some of the pivotal games in developing the
rules of go after disputes arose.
Vit usually gives lessons on KGS, and provides one free lesson so you can see
what it's all about. See his website for more details.
- 4/3/2005 - New ranks: David (5k), Rory (10k), Dale (17k).
- 3/3/2005 - SAGA Council Vacancy: Konrad Scheffler has made himself available to stand for the SAGA council.
He is currently the only player from our club, and the entire Western Cape, available for election.
So if you want to ensure that Stellenbosch and the Western Cape's interests get better representation
at a national level, make sure to submit your vote for your representative when the time comes.
(There's likely to be a ballot, so expect a form in the post sometime soon if you're a SAGA member. On that
note, please mail me ASAP if your postal address has changed since you gave
it to SAGA.)
- 3/3/2005 - SAGA Membership: I have reset everyone's SAGA membership to "No" in our player table,
because it is currently unclear to me whose membership is paid up for 2005.
I will correct the table as soon as I have confirmed the membership list for 2005.
Note the fees for 2005 are slightly higher than 2004. New
rates are R70/R35/R15 for normal/student/scholar membership respectively. If you want to join (and
you need to if you wish to enter the Cape Town Open or the Western Cape Open), you can pay at the
tournament. You can also bring David Richfield or Steve Kroon the money before the Cape Town Open,
and we will make sure your membership is arranged.
- 3/3/2005 - Konrad has kindly provided a commented version of Victor's 2nd round match
in the IGS Rapid Championships.
See the downloads section.
- 1/3/2005 - Ben Gale, who has recently been promoted to 3 dan, has been selected to represent
South Africa at the World Amateur Go Championships in Nagoya City, Japan in late May this year.
This is the second time Ben will represent South Africa - the last time was in 2003. Ben was
selected on the basis of his accumulated credit points being the most in South Africa.
Tops in the Western Cape was Konrad Scheffler, followed by Steve Kroon and David Richfield. To see the
full standings for all South African players, get the spreadsheet from the downloads section.
- 1/3/2005 - The draw for the preliminary rounds of the Western Cape Closed has been competed.
- 1/3/2005 - New rank after lunch: Dale (16 kyu).
- 1/3/2005 - The national rankings to 14 February 2005 are available in the downloads
section.
- 1/3/2005 - Major rank modifications: Our ranking system has again been
synchronised with the national system, which has incorporated our suggested ad hoc promotions. As a result,
nearly all players' ranks have changed. Please see the rating table below for your
new rank.
- 1/3/2005 - New rank: Christina (18k).
- 28/2/2005 - New rank: Wesley (22k).
- 28/2/2005 - Game download: Victor Chow's second round game in the
IGS Rapid Championships
is available in the downloads section. The game is uncommented, but if a strong
(4k or stronger, perhaps) player would comment it, it would be appreciated.
- 28/2/2005 - Internet game reporting: A correction to the announcement on 25 February. Internet
games may be submitted by anyone, not only SAGA members, and they will contribute to your national ranking.
However, only games between SAGA members will contribute to participation points. So, in other words, all
reported internet games between South Africans will be treated just like club games.
- 28/2/2005 - New ranks after last week: Adriaan (29k), Hanno (25k), Wesley (23k), Ben (21k), Rory (14k),
Jaco S. (11k), David (8k).
- 28/2/2005 - Victor Chow has progressed by forfeit through the 3rd round of the
IGS Rapid Championships.
The next round takes place on 12 March.
- 25/2/2005 - A new ruling for games on internet servers - Attention SAGA members: from now on,
if you play an internet game on a server against another SAGA member, it can contribute to your
national ranking. The result should be e-mailed to
Sakkie Buys. You need to include the player names and
usernames, the handicap and komi, when the game was played, the result and the server you played it on. You
must mail the result within one week of the game being played. It is recommended that the winner of the
game make sure that the result is e-mailed. An example of what you could email:
25/2, 11h25 Andre Connell (iaznab) beat Steve Kroon (thekro) 2H, 0.5 komi on IGS (http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/)
Note that you can also still mail me results of any internet
games between people on our rating system as well.
- 25/2/2005 - Victor "RoseDuke" Chow has succesfully made it to the 3rd round of the
IGS Rapid Championships.
The professionals will be participating in the tournament from the 3rd round on. Links to the games
played in the various rounds are available from the tournament's website.
General info
Meetings: Thursday evenings, Stellenbosch Student Centre (the Neelsie), near
Jeff's Place- from around 17h00 until 22h00. Some members also meet some weekdays
12h30 to 14h00, at the same place. Note that if you arrive at 17h00 and no-one is there yet,
it doesn't mean no-one is coming: most club members only attend for a part of the evening,
so if you're a little patient, an opponent or someone who can teach you should arrive.
Queries:e-Mail one of the committee members or
post messages to the whole club on our mailing list.
Entering tournaments:To enter a tournament hosted by the Stellenbosch club, you must send your
name and a contact e-mail address or phone number to David Richfield or Steve Kroon
before the closing date for entries. (Tournaments hosted by our club appear in red in the
Local Go Calendar).
