Final Results

Congratulations to Andrew Davies, who became the 2006 (and first ever) Stellenbosch Go Champion. Second and third were Michael Wang and Andre Connell, respectively, while Rory Beling and Andries Kruger also bagged certificates for achieving the top placement in the 5k-10k and 11k-15k categories, respectively. Andrew was the only player to win all three games. The complete results are:

Announcement

The Stellenbosch Go Club will be hosting the 2006 Stellenbosch Open Go Tournament. This replaces what used to be called the Western Cape Open.
It is intended to be a qualifying tournament for the 2007 South African Candidates’ Tournament. Players of all level are welcome.

Venue :
Mathematics Department (van der Sterr Building), University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch

Fees :
The registration fee is R10 for SAGA members or players who join SAGA for 2007 at the tournament, and R20 for other players. Players are requested to register in advance. Email your name, club and the rank at which you wish to enter to Florian Breuer (fbreuer@sun.ac.za). A late entry fee of R10 will be charged for players registering on the day of the tournament.

The tournament is open to all players. You will be able pay your SAGA membership fee for 2007 at the tournament, if you wish: SAGA fees for
2006 were R80/R35/R20 for adults/students/scholars.

Format :
The tournament will be a 3 round MacMahon tournament, with the bar set at an appropriate level. Time limits will be 1 hour main time per player plus overtime (byo yomi) of 20 moves in each 5 minute overtime period (Canadian byo yomi).

Prizes :
The winner of the tournament will be named the 2006 Stellenbosch Go Champion, and will receive a voucher financed by the registration fees.
There will also be certificates for the top 3 places, as well as the best-placed 5-10k, 11-15k, and 16k or below. There will also be small vouchers for any players (except the tournament winner) who win all their games. These vouchers will be redeemable from SAGA towards the purchase of go books or equipment.

Any players travelling in for the tournament who need accommodation can contact Florian Breuer or Steve Kroon (kroon@sun.ac.za) – the Stellenbosch Go club would be pleased to try to find you a host.
