Gauteng vs WC

The Gauteng-Western Cape Internet Showdown

General Information

This showdown took place on 9 August 2005, at 19h30. Due to its success, similar events may be held more regularly in future – discussions are underway. The format was simple. Each region submitted a team of players. The teams were ordered by the latest available SAGA rankings (7 May 200%). Corresponding positions in the teams were then paired against each other, and matches were played on KGS.

The tournament used Japanese rules with 6.5 komi. There was no handicap unless the rank difference of paired players was greater than 4, otherwise the handicap was the rank difference minus 4. The first board performed nigiri, and colours alternated for the lower boards. Time limits were 45 minutes per player plus 20 stones / 5 minutes Canadian byo yomi.

The original draw was as follows:

Colours were given as red and green – after nigiri on the top board, red and green would be assigned to black and white accordingly.

Results

Three Gauteng players did not arrive for their matches: Claire Jorgensen, Jonah Sack, and Luke Henning. It was agreed that Gerrit Kapp could replace Luke Henning, but the other 2 players forfeited their games. Thus the Western Cape won the showdown 8 games to 5. However, Gauteng dominated the top boards, winning the 4 matches between the highest-ranked players. In summary, the results reflected the greater strength of Gauteng, but the greater depth of the pool of Western Cape players with internet access. All games went according to rank, except for 2 matches, Steve Kroon (5k) beating David Gale (3k), and Gerrit Kapp defeating David Richfield (6k). Congratulations also to Marcus Jaeger and Willem Joubert Jr., who both did well to turn their handicap matches (which, according to rank differences, should have been walkovers) into tight games.
